Since its inception, DESTE—the Greek word for “look”—has been an international organizer of contemporary art exhibitions and a global supporter of arts-based projects and publications. In the early years of its foundation, the Foundation supported exhibitions that showcased the trends of art throughout the 80s and 90s in Greece, Cyprus, and Switzerland, emphasizing the universality of contemporary art.  The Foundation was established in Geneva in 1983 by collector Dakis Joannou.

If you are already planning your Summer Holiday on the Greek Islands, then you should definitely see the recently opened exhibition "The Equilibrists” a project by DESTE Foundation and the New Museum presented at Benaki Museum in Athens. The exhibition is curated by Gary Carrion-Murayari and Helga Christoffersen with Massimiliano Gioni. The Equilibrists brings together work by a new generation of young Greek and Cypriot artists - 33 artists - working in Athens and abroad.

Meanwhile, the DESTE Project Space - Slaughterhouse, Hydra located on the Greek island of Hydra, a magical island of art and beauty, is a must visit. True to its name, the project space is located at what was previously a slaughterhouse, and only open to the public during Summer months - it is the ultimate destination in Greece for contemporary art and culture. This Summer there will be a major exhibition of the Italian artist Roberto Cuoghi at the Slaughterhouse and on the island of Hydra. Previous artists who have shown at the Slaughterhouse Project Space include Paul Chan, Pawel Althamer, Urs Fischer, Doug Aitken, Maurizio Cattelan, Matthew Barney and Elizabeth Peyton.
