Six Senses Douro Valley

Six Senses Douro Valley

Portugal’s rise in popularity may be the fact that there are non-stop flights over the Atlantic. However, the beautiful cities of Lisbon and Porto has been a muse to artists, musicians and writers, and has attracted brilliant minds for quite some time. And now even more so, especially with events such as Brexit. Has Lisbon become the new Berlin?

I just returned from a trip across Portugal and have visited numerous hotels and sights including the Algarve regions, central Lisboa, Alentejo plains, Coimbra, Porto and the Douro Valley and River. The country is easy to navigate, people are warm and friendly, quality of food and wine is superb (as they are known worldwide), history and culture aplenty. I spent two days “living like the Romans” staying in a five-star wine villa (surrounded by 14th-century vineyards) and got around by Lusitano horses. Stayed in a palace hotel where Madonna frequently spends her time, ate at the restaurant in Porto where Diana Krall and her artist friends hang out, and explored classical contemporary architecture of Porto. Lunch on a beach house (the award-winning Joya house) designed by a young collector on the Algarve coast. Visiting the Stonehenge of Portugal with our mystic guide is definitely not for the faint-hearted. The 300 days of sunshine that illuminate this tranquil and peaceful country, is just one aspect that makes it special.
